| PLACES TO GO FOR SHOPPING |
| |
|
Bahrain is an excellent shopping destination. It boasts stores
retailing leading designer brands, world-class malls and coffee
chains. However, it has also retained its own culture with a multitude
of traditional local shops that are full of character. There are
winding narrow streets called the ‘Souk’ meaning Bazaar, housing tiny
emporiums selling middle eastern brass souvenirs, Persian carpets and
pashmina shawls. |

Yateem Center |
|
The
Yateem Center is located just near the entrance to the Manama souq, and
is in fact Bahrain’s first mall. The mall is not too big, but is the
perfect place to kick off a visit to the souq where you can do some
traditional Bahrain shopping in the comfort of an air-conditioned
environment. There is really something for everybody in this friendly
mall, which is a meeting place for the local community and whose
customers include a cross section of residents and tourists. |

| Suqs |

Manama Suq |
|
Manama is the capital of Bahrain and the center of business activities.
The Manama souq is the oldest market place in Bahrain and originally
housed a fish market, meat market and vegetable market. These have
since moved to new locations. What has remained is a mix of old middle
eastern spice shops, road side shops selling materials, electronics,
carpets, perfumes and gold. It is quaint, basic and a charm of a place
for visitors who want to feel the pulse of our tiny island. It is an
eye opener of how things used to be and is a delight for both visitors
and residents alike. A point of special interest while strolling down
winding streets are Bahraini Halwa (confectionery) shops, nuts and
coffee shops. A visit to the souq would not be complete without a tour
of our 3-story Gold center where modern and traditional designs with the
famous Bahraini pearls and other precious stones are one sale. |
| |
|
Muharraq Suq |
|
This
souq is an area rather then a building, and the vast majority of the
shops are basic but worth a visit. Old men beating and shaping bits of
metal into pots, and second-hand stores selling items that are unlikely
to be of any use to anyone, are commonplace. Medical shops offering
herbal powders which were used to treat illnesses before hi-tec
treatments can be found here. The back streets of the area look and
feel like the Middle East of old, before the air-conditioned malls and
their spin of branded goods. |
